Every year, on September 17th, the global health community observes World Patient Safety Day, an initiative by the World Health Organization (WHO) to raise awareness about the importance of patient safety.

Patient safety refers to the avoidance of harm or injury during the course of healthcare delivery. In spite of advancements in medical science, millions of patients around the world still experience adverse events due to unsafe healthcare practices. These events, ranging from medication errors to infections acquired in healthcare facilities, are often preventable and can have serious, sometimes fatal, consequences.

Why is Patient Safety Important?

Patient safety is the foundation of effective healthcare. Without it, trust between patients and healthcare providers is compromised, and the risk of harm increases. Ensuring safe practices  such as medication safety protocols, surgical safety checklists and fall prevention strategies protects patients from preventable injuries, errors, and infections that can result from medical treatments.

How Can We Achieve Patient Safety?

  • Continuous training in safe practices and new healthcare technologies ensures that doctors, nurses, and support staff are equipped to avoid errors and respond quickly to emergencies.
  • Developing clear guidelines for patient care, such as infection prevention measures, safe medication administration, and proper use of medical equipment.
  • Encouraging open communication between healthcare teams and with patients can help identify potential issues before they escalate.

How You Can Participate in World Patient Safety Day

  • Share information about patient safety on social media using the hashtag #WorldPatientSafetyDay.
